The favoured left at A-frames is a super consistent, high-performance wave that can also produce perfect barrels when the tide is low and the swell is up from the south. The left usually consists of two sections – the outside which is the most consistent and the inside bowl. In ideal conditions the two sections connect.

What kind of wave is A-frames?

A-frames, also known as Candys, is a clean and near-perfect left that typically splits into two sections. There is sometimes a short right at the take-off but this is significantly shorter than the more popular left. The outside section is more consistent with a long shoulder. Under ideal conditions, A-frames picks up speed, bowls out, and barrels. As one of many world class waves in the Northern Mentawais, A-frames doesn’t pose the danger of an exposed reef but be warned – if you’re caught inside, you’re due for a long paddle back to the peak.
