The favoured left at A-frames is a super consistent, high-performance wave that can also produce perfect barrels when the tide is low and the swell is up from the south. The left usually consists of two sections – the outside which is the most consistent and the inside bowl. In ideal conditions the two sections connect.
A-frames, also known as Candys, is a clean and near-perfect left that typically splits into two sections. There is sometimes a short right at the take-off but this is significantly shorter than the more popular left. The outside section is more consistent with a long shoulder. Under ideal conditions, A-frames picks up speed, bowls out, and barrels. As one of many world class waves in the Northern Mentawais, A-frames doesn’t pose the danger of an exposed reef but be warned – if you’re caught inside, you’re due for a long paddle back to the peak.

The nearby anchorage gives easy access to paddle out to A-frames longer left and occasional right from a boat. Getting caught on the inside can equate to a long spaghetti-arm-inducing paddle back out. Expert tip: kick out early on your first few waves to get a view of where the wave ends.
A-frames is a popular peak on the east side of Pulau Penanggalansabe. A small island just 5 minutes by boat from Karangmajat Island, home of the famous surf breaks Kandui and Rifles in what is known as the Playgrounds area of the Mentawai Islands.
Situated in the Northern Mentawais the only way to access A-frames is by boat. If you are staying on land at any of the surf camps or resorts in the Northern Mentawais area you will be accessing most surf breaks in a small wooden outrigger with an outboard motor. If you are cruising around in style aboard one of surf boat charters you will be anchoring up and paddling straight out! Tap this link to find out how to get to the Mentawai Islands.
